Porsche’s 944 S2 Cabriolet is a rare bird; this is only one of 1,824 examples exported to the United States in 1990. One of the last 944s and a relatively rare convertible, lightly used but well cared for in the typical Porsche fashion; it looks like a car with a tenth of the mileage on the inside and it only has 56k actual miles and comes from the sunny state of Arizona.
Built in Audi’s Neckarsulm factory and American Sunroof Company’s in Weinsberg, Germany in February 1990.
Dressed in Guards Red, the car’s paint and trim are in very good condition overall, the car’s body is straight and solid, the engine bay is very tidy, the small, lined cargo area has room for the boot for when the top’s down and the body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body. There are minor blemishes on the nose and the rear bumper. The black, power-folding canvas top looks good, too and contrasts nicely with the paint.
This example rolls on new Advanta ER-700 radials, size 225/50R16 at every corner. Each tire is mounted to a factory Porsche alloy wheel. The wheels are in good, original condition.
Under the hood is possibly the biggest four-cylinder engine in production at that time, a 3.0L DOHC, 16-valve four-cylinder (code M44/41). The engine is bolted to a five-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience features include power windows and power seats.
Inside, there is a beige leather interior. The front buckets are in very good order, as are the rear demi-buckets. The matching carpet is great and protected by black Porsche floor mats. The four-spoke steering wheel houses the driver’s side airbag. The instrument panel has a full suite of VDO gauges, the inner door panels are in good original order and the center console looks great. A console-mounted shift lever and a Blaupunkt stereo complete the interior.
In 1989, Porsche introduced the 944 S2 Cabriolet, the first 944 to feature a convertible body style. The contract to build Porsche's 944 S2 Cabriolet was awarded to ASC (American Sunroof Company) in Weinsberg, Germany.
The S2 Cabriolet was a very complicated build, where 944 coupe bodies were taken off the assembly line at Neckarsulm, Germany, then delivered to ASC in Weinsberg. There, reinforcement plates were welded in the front end of the car and floor plate area to give the body the amount of torsional strength and crash safety required for convertibles. After welding in the reinforcement plates, cuts were made in the body at the windshield frame, B-pillars, rear side panels and tail panel, in preparation for coupe top removal.
New parts to support the convertible top and the new rear deck lid were also welded in place. Then the new cabriolet body returned to Neckarsulm, where it is run through the standard production paint shop and assembly line for drive train install.
Consequently, the structure of the paint finish and other corrosion inhibiting measures conform with the quality standards for Porsche and its new Cabriolet. The assembled Cabriolet was then sent back to ASC in Weinsberg for convertible top and trim installation.
With production not starting until May of 1989, only 16 of the 944 S2 Cabriolets were produced for the U.S. market. For the 1990 model year, Porsche produced 3,938 cars for all markets including, right-hand drive units for the United Kingdom, Australia and South Africa. The share for the U.S. market in 1990 increased to 1,824 units and followed with 561 units for 1991, which was the final year of production for the 944 S2 Cabriolet.
Cabrio competition to this Porsche in 1990 included BMW’s M3 Cabrio, Chevrolet’s Camaro IROC-Z, Ferrari’s Mondial T Cabriolet, Ford’s Mustang LX, Maserati’s Spyder IE and Mercedes-Benz’s 300 SL.
